Our next Film Night at the Fun Home screening is The Farewell (2019), directed by Lulu Wang.
The film follows a Chinese American woman named Billi (Awkwafina), who learns her grandmother, Nai Nai, has a serious illness, and not long left to live. Billi's family decides to schedule a family wedding before Nai Nai dies, and not tell Nai Nai of her fatal illness.
We are co-hosting this screening with Dr Xi Liu (they/them), who is a Clinical Psychologist with a private practice in Eora. They were the first Chinese-speaking therapist to achieve Advanced Schema Therapy accreditation and they regularly supervise psychologists from China and Hong Kong. Xi specialises in supporting LGBTQ+ and marginalised communities with issues like grief and trauma.
Xi will be speaking about the themes in the film from a Chinese cultural perspective. The Farewell is a beautiful film that holds a lot for us to unpack in terms of death literacy, and we look forward to some thoughtful and lively discussions after the film.
Tea and snacks provided. Entry is by donation to help us cover the costs of putting on this event.
